On May 2, 2012, McDonald’s restaurants across the country will celebrate McHappy Day, an annual fundraising event where $1 from every Big Mac sandwich, Happy Meal and hot McCafé beverage sold will go to local Ronald McDonald Houses. Last year McDonald’s was able to raise over 3 million dollars on this special day. This year marks the 19th anniversary of this wonderful event.

We were SO proud to be invited to volunteer one hour of our time to work at a McDonald’s location of our choice, in support of the Ronald McDonald House. We chose to volunteer at the McDonald’s on Calgary Trail and 51 avenue in Edmonton, from 11:30am to 12:30pom.

We want to make an impact.

We wanted to make a big deal out of this event so we asked our friends at First Foundation and Schmidt Realty if they would want to volunteer along side us. Graciously, they accepted our invitation. To make a bigger impact, as a team the three of our companies have decided to ALL match McDonald’s donations from your purchases for the hour that we are there, until we reach our goal. That’s 4x what would normally be donated!

We need your support.

What can YOU do to help us reach our goal? Come in to the Calgary Trail and 51 avenue Edmonton location, between 11:30am and 12:30pm on Wednesday, May 2 and purchase a Big Mac sandwich, Happy Meal or a hot McCafe beverage. Please make sure to mention that you heard about the event from us.

Every person who comes in will receive a special invitation to tour the 42,000 square foot Ronald McDonald House Northern AB. You will also be entered to win a special opportunity for you and your family to join us as VIP guests at one of their wonderful “Home for Dinner” evenings, where volunteers come in to prepare a home cooked meal for the children and families in the house.

Please help us make a difference in these children’s lives.

Is Your Business Missing Out on the Mobile Crowd?

With more and more people embracing their smartphones every day, your small business will really miss out if it is ignoring mobile altogether. This crowd will only continue to grow and it doesn’t take much time or money to reach out to these consumers and get them spending more money with your business.

You have to admit that your cell phone comes in super handy when you’re not at home. You can use it to set alarms, to check Twitter and Facebook, to take pictures, to send quick emails, and to look up product prices to see if you’re getting the best deal. If you have a small business in a physical location (or locations), cashing in on utilitarian cell phone users can boost your profits more than you think. Let’s face it – you might be cutting edge, but most smart phone users are still pretty new to the whole new media thing. So how can you grab their mobile attention?

Create some kind of very useful free app

Not sure on the numbers in terms of people who pay for apps, but personally I don’t spend lots of money on it. Of course, other users may be more likely to shell out a few bucks for an app, but if you create something useful and FREE? It’s just that much better. Maybe you’re a restaurant that creates an app allowing me to order online. Or maybe you’re a bakery that creates a simple game I can use to win free cupcakes. Whatever. Be creative and get people downloading!

Give a Mobile Version of Your Site

Nothing annoys me more when using a cell phone than trying to look up something on a business’ website on my cell phone and there is no mobile version of the site. Half the time, some ad pops up on the screen making it impossible to click on anything. Creating a mobile site is actually extremely easy (WordPress users have their choice of plugins that create it automatically for example). So no excuses!

Reward Loyalty

People are still kind of figuring out location based mobile apps, but there are already likely thousands of Foursqaure and Gowalla users in your area. Reward their loyalty when they check in to your business’ location. An easy way to do this is to give a free item or discount to anyone who shows a waiter/clerk/etc. that they’ve checked in. You can also give a bigger reward to the person who is the mayor on the first of every month – it encourages coming in often to compete with other users.

With more and more people embracing their smartphones every day, your small business will really miss out if it is ignoring mobile altogether. This crowd will only continue to grow and it doesn’t take much time or money to reach out to these consumers and get them spending more money with your business.

We (Andrew) sat down with our Account Representative: Christina Snipes from Pure Logic and asked her a few questions about her day to day at work:

Andrew: Hello, Christina

Christina: Yo, yo, yo, yo!

Andrew: Tell all the readers what you love about working at Pure Logic

Christina: I enjoy working at Pure Logic because of the people I work with and the people I get to meet. It feels good to provide a service for businesses that will actually benefit their company in more than one way. And most importantly, we just have so much fun within our office!

Andrew: Your in a dance off, and you get to choose who it’s against, Zac Efron or Lance Bass from N Sync. Who do you choose and why?

Christina: Zac Efron for sure! I chose him because he has some swag and I think in a dance off between the two of us he might just be able to keep up with me!

Andrew: What would you consider to be your best quality and why?

Christina: My vocal skills. I get comments daily about my skills; whether my music is blasting in the back room or through my head phones, I’m always singing like no ones around!

Andrew: There’s a great pair of shoes on sale at the mall, and there’s only one pair left. You and one other woman eye the shoes, how do you make sure you get them and not her?

Christina: I have a very scary ‘stink eye’ that seems to work on people that don’t know me lol.

Andrew: If you could describe working at Pure Logic in one word, what would it be?

Christina: Fun!

Andrew: Bye Christina.

Christina: Deuces Andrew.

Christina Snipes,

Facebook Business Pages turn to the new timeline March 30th.

Customize Your Facebook Timeline Cover

While you can no longer use custom landing pages for you brand page, Timeline provides you with a large, 850px by 315px banner that goes across the top of your page. This is the billboard of your Facebook Timeline. Facebook is discouraging users from using the cover as a means of advertisement, and I completely agree with them. The best way to use the cover is to show off what your brand is all about. Use the timeline cover to entice your viewers into diving deeper into your company information. It’s rumored that timeline covers containing advertisements will be disabled. Whether this is supposed to happen or not, they specifically state not to use the timeline cover as a means to advertise directly.

Facebook Timeline about Section

Depending on how you originally setup your Facebook page, this section will display a number of different things. The about section will display a short description for brand pages or contact information for a local business page. In addition to this information, this section will also be able to display the number of likes the timeline has, a map of your business location, custom app icons and other basic information.

Facebook Timeline Page Apps

As I’ve mentioned repeatedly, Facebook will be doing away with Facebook Page apps which so far is the only downside to making the transition from Page to Timeline. You will no longer find a list of apps when you visit a page timeline on the left hand side, you will now be shown a row of four apps icons right below the Timeline cover. There are four tiles that are visible at first, which can be modified from the admin panel functions. One of these slots is permanently Photos and will fill the first of the 4 icon spots.

The downside here is that non-fans can no longer automatically be greeted with a custom landing page, instead they will be greeted with your page Timeline, and the first thing they see will be your Timeline cover and your wall. This is a bit unfortunate for people who are acquiring likes and contact information through custom landing pages or even enticing fans to “Like” their page through contests of free offers. It is important to remember that custom apps and contest or coupons will not be as easily accessible to users without the “Like bait” pages that forced users into liking to get more info. This means that if you intend to use a custom app or run a contest on a custom page, you need to make sure that you modify your default page applications so the custom apps show up in plain view.

To edit the apps displayed on your Facebook page find the drop down icon on the right side of the app tiles, click on the + sign and import your apps. You can hover over the apps and using the pencil icon rearranges them to suit your needs.

One on One sit down with Hair Massacure and our very own Ashley Green.

Hair Massacure

Our very own Ashley Green from Pure Logic sat down with the team from Hair Massacure for a one on one.

Inspired by their youngest daughter, Kali, the St. Valentine’s Day Hair Massacure was formed by the MacDonald family who, at the age of 2 was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. After enduring 3 years of chemotherapy on a daily basis, Kali was cleared from cancer and treatment on her 5th birthday and Kali and has thankfully remained in a state of remission since.

The first Hair Massacure event was held on February 14th, 2003 and raised $37,000 for Kids with Cancer Society. Hair “pinking” was introduced in 2005 and the event grew to include nearly one thousand people pinking and shaving their hair. At first, the event was created with a focus on building awareness but, as the years passed, fundraising for organizations such as Make-A-Wish Northern Alberta, Ronald McDonald House, and the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation grew.

To date, Hair Massacure has raised close to six million dollars for cancer research with almost two thousand participants every year. The event is hosted at the West Edmonton Mall Ice Palace, supported by the Edmonton Oilers, Edmonton Rush, musicians and local celebrities. Although fuelled by the local support throughout Edmonton, the success of this event is due to the passion and hard work of Tammy MacDonald (co-founder and Executive Director), her family, and her team.

The Pure Logic team became involved with this fantastic event in late 2011. Combining our team’s knowledge and resources, we were able to redesign the Hair Massacure website and coach them on the power of social media. The real reward of being involved with Hair Massacure was hearing the life changing stories and witnessing the impact that this event has on so many people. It has been an absolute pleasure getting to know Tammy, the rest of her family, and her team: Jaime and Brandi.

The Hair Massacure Team! (Brandi, Jamie & Tammy!)

Below are a few questions we had for the Hair Massacure team:

Pure Logic: What has been the most rewarding thing about Hair Massacure?

Tammy MacDonald: The impact it makes. The money is one source of impact…obviously that’s huge. But on an individual basis, the impact it makes on each person that donates, participates, volunteers; just generally involved, that’s the biggest reward for me, personally.

Jaime Caza: I think, similar to that; these kids feel like, and ARE actually beating cancer and other illnesses by being a part of this. They actually don’t feel powerless under all these diseases; they get to do something, and stand up and fight with this event and have fun. Not many parents would let their kids walk around with pink hair otherwise.

Pure Logic: So this question is just for Brandi and Jamie. Describe Tammy in a few words.

Brandi Wurtz: Inspiring, passionate, chaotic, and fierce will be my last word.

Jaime Caza: Viciously loyal, fierce, frustrating and someone with a huge, huge heart.

Pure Logic: Did you choose pink because it’s your favourite color?

Tammy MacDonald : I hate pink. Pink was a total accident. We didn’t even plan for it. For the 2005 Massacure, Gord (Kali’s dad) came home and said “It’s so hard getting pledges… I should just dye my hair pink.” He was just venting but I agreed! I bet him, “Go to work tomorrow and ask five guys, if they say no …I will never bring it up again.” So he came home that night and said “yah…all the guys want to do it.”I got on the phone with Bridget Ryan (from Breakfast Television) and told her “I want to do a pinking on TV.” …It blew up the next year. It generated more pledges and overall interest in the event!

Becoming involved in the Hair Massacure project is a fantastic way to give back to the community, raise awareness for children with life threatening diseases and support a fantastic cause. We asked Allen from ‘The Retreat Salon and Spa’ from Fork Saskatchewan to describe his recent involvement with Hair Massacure:

Pure Logic: How did you get started with Hair Massacure and how many years have you been involved?

Retreat Salon and Spa: We were having a brainstorming session last year to find new ways for volunteering and get involved. We had known about the event but not about the details and not a lot of work was happening in the Fort Saskatchewan area so that’s where we wanted to help out. We’ve been involved for 2 years now. We had the opportunity to be a “pinking salon” this year (we pinked almost 50 proud victims) and be involved from the start of the 2011/2012 campaign, which was nice.

Pure Logic: What has been the most rewarding moment with your involvement?

Retreat Salon and Spa: I think that for the salon in general it was the opportunity to shave heads and hear the stories from the people that day. That was definitely the highlight of being involved.

"The MacDonald's Dog: Fred!"

The Pure Logic team is so honoured to be involved in such a wonderful cause and we are looking forward to continuing our involvement with Hair Massacure in the future! We wish Tammy and her team continued success as they look towards the 2012/2013 campaign!

Social Media is changing all the time with new services and new technology appearing at a blinding pace. Social Media Marketing must be approached very different than traditional marketing.

With the advent of Social Media everything has changed. An online community of Twitter or Facebook users can make or break your business with their iPhones. Your company or service may be getting hundreds or thousands of good or bad reviews either building up your reputation or tearing it down without you even knowing it. You need Social Media Management. Social Networking sites are growing exponentially. A Social Media Manager through effective Social Media Management strategy can help you build a positive presence and increase your customer base.

Facebook marketing – in 2009, the population of Facebook surpassed that of the U.S.A. In just over two years, it is now double the population of the US. If Facebook were a nation, they would be the 3rd largest in the world. The impact of this on marketing through Social Media Management is staggering. Big corporations are quickly catching on to the power of Social Media Marketing, which includes Twitter marketing. For the first time, in 2010, ending a 23 year run, Pepsi Cola pulled out of advertising in the Super Bowl ditching it for Social Media. The phenomenal growth of Social Media (texting, blogging, networking)has the attention of every major company. Social Media Management has become an essential component in today’s business.

You Need Social Media Marketing

Are you up to speed on the new Social Media or are you overwhelmed by all the Social Media offered online today?

Social Media is changing all the time with new services and new technology appearing at a blinding pace. Social Media Marketing must be approached very different than traditional marketing. You are not selling your business, you are creating relationships through communities. If people feel you are part of their community, they will support you and recommend you to their friends. It is truly word-of-mouth marketing at its best.

Do you have a Social Media Management plan and strategy?

Do you understand the do’s and the don’ts of Social Media Marketing?

Social Media Marketing has its own rules that are very different than traditional marketing. It is very important to know how to structure and manage a Social Media Marketing campaign as your company’s reputation depends on it. Marketing on Facebook and marketing on Twitter are very different, for example, yet both are necessary for a complete campaign.

Seven different styles

Another set of Twitologies becomes apparent when we look at the different styles adopted by these B2B brands on Twitter. Most tend to default to one or a mixture of seven styles:

Sleepers: Dormant accounts awaiting the right time to take the plunge or until squatters have been evicted.

London Buses: A variant of ‘Sleepers’. Resource constraints, a lack of strategy and perhaps a loss of interest causes these accounts to Tweet in concentrated bursts before again becoming dormant. Just like waiting for a bus, there are none then they all arrive at once

Pub Bores: Accounts providing frequent updates on themselves and little else. Because the broadcaster has little of interest to say or report, they turn off followers

Raconteurs: A positive variation of the Pub Bore. Their updates may relate to themselves but because what they are doing is of interest, so are their tweets

Mavens: Accounts sharing summaries of and links to deeper content (their own or others). Their success depends on the relevance and quality of content as well as their ability to convey its core message in Tweets

Philosophers: Those taken to sharing 140 character observations on the world, their business niche or life in general. Some are of course more insightful than others

Socialisers: These gregarious accounts use Twitter not to broadcast, but to engage. They hold conversations with followers, those followed and the wider ‘Twitterverse’ either to resolve customer service issues or build bonds

Of course, there’s no one right or wrong approach but Mavens with high quality content and Socialisers who genuinely engage seem to thrive in a B2B context.

What kind of Twit are you? What kind of Twit do you want to be?
